The reliefcut

The artist has developed a special artistic technique, namely that of the Reliefcut. Since 2004 a great body of work has been created in this way and continuous refinement has made his works more and more complex. This non-interchangeable creation is defined as a distinctive style of Gerhard W. Schmidbauer.

Contrary to the collage, which is a conglomerate of different elements on the same layer, Schmidbauer's art work developes into and/or out of the depth. Each graphic element of the motif is an exact cut of the front paper and the space created is underlayed with another piece of paper or textile.

According to the differences in colours, structures and shadows of the motifs, further cuts are made into the layers behind the front paper. Therefore, numerous layers of different coloured and styled papers and/or textiles are joined together, each piece behind the other and assembled to produce a complete work of art which develops into a kind of relief out of the depth.

The artist questions the boundaries of two-dimensional artistic execution and creates an art work which defies the illusion of the third dimension of paintings, as he puts it into effect within the existing perspective.
